ABOUT THE FILM

OXYGEN is an impactful short abstract film that dives into the gripping journey of Kaya, a young woman who bravely confronts the aftermath of sexual assault.

SYNOPSIS

OXYGEN is a haunting, abstract drama that delves into the psychological aftermath of trauma through the eyes of 18-year-old Kaya. Trapped in a surreal, shifting landscape, oscillating between the sensation of drowning and a black void of fragmented memory, Kaya relives the torment of an abusive relationship and sexual violence.

Echoes of gaslighting and threats fill the void, while fractured memories and nightmarish imagery—Kaya submerged in darkness, covered in blood, assaulted by flashing lights and distorted reflections—depict her internal collapse. The narrative flows like a dream, or a descent, until Kaya finally breaks the surface, both literally and emotionally, during a police interview. This moment offers a painful but hopeful glimpse of support and survival, as she begins to swim toward the surface.

Visually poetic and emotionally raw, OXYGEN captures the silent suffocation of trauma and the honest, harrowing path toward reclaiming breath.

"As someone who has personally experienced this kind of abuse, I know how deeply it affects those who endure it. This film is about giving a voice to the countless women who lack the opportunity, or the courage, to share their own stories. Through this film, we hope to shed light on their experiences, break the silence, foster greater understanding, and urge society to confront the reality of this issue."

FAY DAVIES as
KAYA WOODS

“My first initial thoughts were how honest it was, and the script wasn’t trying to sugar-coat anything, or give a glamourised picture of what these situations can look like. That’s a conversation me and Tilda had about how many TV shows and movies do glamourise it.

Kaya is a lot, and it is really important to me to try and do her justice, because I think she sees herself as someone who’s done a lot of things wrong in this situation, but she hasn’t. She has that negative view of herself, and I think it’s really important to show that that’s not the truth of who she actually is. She’s also 18 and going through loads of stuff that 18-year-olds do. She means a lot, and I think there’s so much to her that I wish I could show.

This is something that happens hundreds of times a day, every single day, to so many young people, especially young women. So I think this film has to be a bit of a punch to the stomach and open people’s eyes, but hopefully also give people who have been through similar things a bit of hope to show them that you are not alone, and we are trying to open the line of communications to talk about this stuff more.”
